Major Nathan D. Morris joined "The Commandant's Own," United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, in September 2007 as a member of the percussion section. After two years of service, then-Corporal Morris volunteered for Task Force East, a provisional rifle company based in the National Capital Region. During this assignment, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a rifleman and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Following his return from Iraq, Major Morris was named Percussion Drillmaster in January 2009. That same year, he also began serving as the unit's Public Affairs Assistant. In 2010, he was appointed Snare Drum Section Leader, and in November 2012, he was selected as the Percussion Instructor and Arranger, a billet he held until December 2014. In January 2015, Major Morris attended the Warrant Officer Basic Course at Camp Barrett in Quantico, Virginia, before returning to "The Commandant's Own" as the Unit Operations Officer. He subsequently served as the Executive Officer of the Drum & Bugle Corps prior to assuming command as the Commanding Officer in February 2022.
Under his leadership, the Drum & Bugle Corps has continued to build upon its tradition of excellence through major international performances, high-level collaborations, and strategic partnerships that bolster the Corps' role as a premier ceremonial and musical ambassador for the Marine Corps.
Major Morris began his musical instruction at age nine. He attended Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia, studying under acclaimed Director Alfred Watkins and percussion instructor Mike Lynch. While at Lassiter, he performed with the symphonic band, percussion ensemble, and the 1998 Bands of America National Championship marching band. He later attended Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), studying under Lalo Dávila. At MTSU, he performed with the "Band of Blue," percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, salsa band, and steel band.
In 2004, Major Morris won the PASIC Indoor Drumline Championship. During his collegiate summers, he marched with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps as a snare drummer (2003-2005), later returning as a staff member in 2006 and 2007. He also performed with the Atlanta Quest Winter Drumline (2003-2004) and Music City Mystique, earning a bronze medal in 2005 and a gold medal in 2006.
Major Morris has performed with "The Commandant's Own" across the United States and globally, including tours of Europe, the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. He has performed for Presidents, Heads of State, and senior military leaders. Notable appearances include performances for Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joseph R. Biden Jr. during Evening Parades at Marine Barracks Washington, as well as joint performances with the New York Philharmonic.
Major Morris is a graduate of The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication from Middle Tennessee State University.
His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
